Li webtech hosting service down due to verizon contruction in nassau conty

Major verizon business service affected....

Started about 800am... still on going verizon wire/pipe cut .....

Will update page as service is restore......

6:30-8:00pm
Fiber Damage...Under construction...over night to restore T1 service...to my clients and Host Service.....Failed failover systems are down...as well..

updated... 6-1-11

Just got one of the servers up now. I will be working on it for the next few hours. I will know more later.

Around 9:15 am yesterday there was some kind of major cable cut in our area which killed a high capacity line (I am told it was an OC12) and it took down several hundred smallers circuits including ours. We were told at the time the repair would likely be done by the afternoon. Later in the day our upstream provider claimed it would be done later or overnight. We were told that due to so many circuits being knocked out that they would be working overnight to fix it.

I came in at 5am to check on things and called our upstream provider (Transbeam) who told me
that in fact Verizon stopped work last night and would be going back at 8am. I told them about
how I was told that they would work overnight and nobody is taking the blame for that lie.
So at 5:30am I ordered a couple of new servers to replace the ones here that handle our primary and secondary dns and am waiting for the provisioning of them to complete. Once they are done we
can put the dns live and most of the accounts should come back up. There are some older accounts
on servers here that will have to be moved to new servers, but we will have to see how much
comes up.

I wish I had an exact time line on all of this. Everyone seems to tell one story and then change it
later. We have had outtages before, but nothing ever like this. Even with cable cuts in the past
it was 4-5 hours, not a full day.

Some upset clients ...

Fios Forum News:

Why IT Field Techs are uphappy with subcontracting conditions...

From : IT tech from Linkedin Group ...

What we need to do is band together and form a nationwide organization the screens and qualifies tech on their own abilities and experience and then test them with the organizations own standards. Then market the organization as having only top-notch, qualified, experienced pros who cost less to hire because the do the job the right way the first time. An organization that polices itself and dumps the losers to prtect its reputaion, integrity, and goodwill with its customers. The middle man (the Brokers) are either convincing buyers that they can get quality work dirt cheap or they swoon them with some other bs like "we will have a neverending supply of resources ie. we have 14,000 tech ready to go right now. Have you ever checked those lists of techs? over 30 % have never picked up a WO and over 30% have not done a WO in over 2 years. That means only 30% are actually active.

These brokers, for the most part, have no real utility because they drive down the price of the jobs and load the market with clowns who pass them selves off as techs. Which makes PMs, PCs, and companies in general gun-shy. Then these guys want a percentage of everything including reimbursed expenses. This angers me to the point that I end up spraying my words when I whine.

Now one pack of theives wants me to pay them almost 4% of the gross of WOs so they can provide me with WORKERs COMP. In Ohio! Ohio has pooled Workers Comp. Sole proprietors, owners, partners, and officers in corporations are not covered by workers comp in Ohio, only their employees. Therefore sole proprietors, or C corps with a single stockholder without employees are not required to carry it. When I brought this up they basically told me TS. They said show us you have it or we will charge you the %. I'm sure they don't miss me at all, but I used to pick up EVERY decent WO they put out. Now I only pick up the WO when some other broker lists it. And why shouldn't I. These companies list it with all 3 brokers I use at the same time, most of the time any way. But the other 2 aren't so good either. One was a staf that can't speak english and the other has a web site with a user interface that doesn't fit on the screen and has more pop-ups than a cheesy porn site.

Let me say this. I like tekserve and I like the way they work, and the way their PMs, PCs and helpdesk people either know what is going on or will within minutes. I like the way they support us techs and only ask us to professionally represent them when we are on site. I really enjoy and appreciate they way they talk with, and act towards me as a field tech. If my area had more work I would be totaly satisfied in working only with Tekserve. Unfortunatley, in my area there is just not the demographics to support that much work in my area. I am setup direct with a few other companies also but the amout of work that they can provide still doesn't put me to what the cost of living demands. I therefore, am forced to also work through brokers. Brokers who have systematically eroded and wiped out all respect I had for them.

Could techs band together and book our own work from major buyers and spread the jobs all over the country. You know some of these companies are ripe for the picking. We have all worked for them. The guys with problems galore in the field, poor docs, Angry PMs and PCs, and they pay slow or nit pick and try to get out of paying.

I figured out a long time ago these companies have these issues because they don't have their act together and are constantly not making the SLAs so they are getting hammered with bill-backs and non-performance pentalties so they take it out on us and blame us, and act like we are the stupid ones.

But could you get enough of techs to stick together for the common good and for a self serving company that demanded the we all meet certain criteria and that the customers paid a fair price for what we do.

Saddly, I don't see it happening

And it is a sad state that there are that many people out here that all feel the same.

Another day in wire hole

Fixing Losted Recycling BIn

First perform a search for "Recycling Bin" by going to Start, Search.

That probably won't work, I'm looking up more information on your problem. I'll edit this later.

*Edit: Here you go!

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Personalization, click Personalization, and then click Change desktop icons.
3. Click to select the Recycle Bin check box, and then click OK.

*Edit: That may work, but I think that's only for Vista. Try right-clicking your desktop and selecting "properties." On the window that comes up, select the "desktop" tab, then click "customize desktop." On the next window, select "recycle bin (full)" and click "restore default," then repeat with "recycle bin (empty)."

Step 2: Configure your wireless settings
Connect your Xbox 360 console to your wireless network by following these steps:
On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
Select Network Settings.
Select Configure Network.
On the Basic Settings tab, select Wireless Mode.

Note If wireless mode is not available and you are using the black Wireless N Networking Adapter, try using the software installation disc included with the adapter. For more information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Select Specify Unlisted Network and enter your wireless network name.
Select your wireless security.

Enter your wireless network password, and then select Done.

Step 3: Improve your wireless signal
Here are some ideas for improving the strength of your wireless network signal:
Move your router or gateway off the floor and away from walls and metal objects (such as metal file cabinets).

Minimize obstructions along the straight line path between your console and your wireless router or gateway.

Shorten the distance between your console and your wireless router or gateway.

Change the position of the antenna on your Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter.

Turn off wireless devices such as 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) cordless telephones. If you have a dual mode router or gateway, try switching to 802.11a or "A," because it's less affected by interference. To learn how to switch wireless modes, refer to the documentation that came with your network hardware.

Try changing your wireless channel. Wireless routers and gateways can broadcast on different channels and one channel might be clearer than another. To learn how to change wireless channels, refer to the documentation that came with your network hardware.

Add a wireless repeater to extend your wireless network range. You can boost your signal strength by placing a wireless repeater halfway between your network hardware and your Xbox 360 console.
After improving your wireless signal, test your Xbox LIVE connection (on the console, go to My Xbox, select System Settings, select Network Settings, and then select Test Xbox LIVE Connection).

If you receive the same error, please try the next step.
Step 4: Wireless standard 802.11n or WPA2 authentication
About wireless standard 802.11n
If you are using an 802.11n or N type router or gateway and the Xbox Wireless G Networking Adapter (the gray adapter with a single antenna), make sure that your network hardware is broadcasting in "mixed mode." To learn how to configure your hardware to broadcast in mixed mode, refer to your hardware documentation or the manufacturer’s Web site.
About WPA2 authentication
Before you can use WPA2 authentication, you must have the latest Dashboard update on your Xbox 360 console. You can tell that you need a Dashboard updated if:
The WPA 2 option is dimmed on the Specify Unlisted Network screen.
Your wireless network is not listed after you select Scan for Networks (in step 2).
To download the latest Dashboard update, connect your Xbox 360 console to your router or gateway by using a network cable. Sign in to Xbox LIVE and download the update. After you have downloaded the update, disconnect the network cable from your console, and try to configure your wireless settings again (repeat "Step 2: Configure your wireless settings" above).

The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Identity-Based Security
Through this acquisition, Symantec will be able to help businesses incorporate identity security into a comprehensive framework so that IT can confidently and securely adopt new computing models - from cloud computing to social networking and mobile computing to user-owned devices - that promise operational efficiencies and freedom of choice for their employees and customers. That framework is based on five imperatives that Symantec is enabling as part of its new vision of computing and includes:

Identity security: proving that people and sites are who they say they are
Mobile security: securing each different mobile device and the information on it
Information protection: protecting information from loss, attack, theft and misuse and ensuring the ability to recover that information
Context and relevance: delivering information that is relevant to people in both their personal and professional roles
Cloud: allowing the secure delivery of applications and information from the cloud
Our Brand
With this exciting evolution in our company vision, we will also evolve Symantec's corporate logo. Following the close of the transaction, Symantec plans to incorporate the VeriSign check mark into a new logo to convey to users that it is safe to communicate, transact commerce and exchange information online.

When we are ready to officially change the logo and update materials, you will receive a communication with new guidelines and resources from Symantec.

What changes will Channel Partners see?
Until the acquisition closes, Symantec and VeriSign will continue to operate as separate companies, developing and delivering products as usual.

Following the close of the acquisition, VeriSign products will not initially be available for sale through Symantec's channel partners. As we broaden our go-to-market approach over time, we will assess how VeriSign products will be incorporated into Symantec's wider channel strategy. We look forward to sharing the channel strategy, along with the updates to our brand and the value it represents to our mutual customers, as more information becomes available. Until then, please continue operating business as usual.

Symantec considers our partners an integral part of our sales team and key to our ongoing success. Our belief is that you and your customers will see significant benefit from combined synergies of two companies with unmatched capabilities to secure and protect information and identities on the broadest scale and scope possible.

To learn more about this proposed acquisition, as well as Symantec's strategy of identity-based security, I encourage you to visit http://go.symantec.com/verisign for additional information. During the coming months, we will be focused on ensuring continuity of operations of both companies as we close the acquisition and begin developing new products and services enabled by the combination of these technologies.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Symantec partner account manager. We greatly appreciate your business and look forward to establishing an even greater partnership with you.

Best regards,

Bill Robbins

pci update on credit terminal clients...

Retirement of Pre-PCI Attended POS PIN Entry Devices U.S. and Canada regions
Effective 31 December 2014, all pre-Payment Card Industry Point of Sale (PCI POS) PIN acceptance devices (devices designed and tested earlier than PCI POS PIN Entry Device (PED) Version 1.x specifications) used in an attended environment are to be replaced by devices that are PCI-approved for deployment at the time of deployment.

In 2002, Visa announced enhancements to the PIN management requirements for POS PEDs and established associated mandates for the use and retirement of PEDs. Oneenhancement, which went into effect on 1 January 2004, required that all newly deployed attended (face-to-face) POS PEDs be independently validated and approved by Visa as compliant with the PED security requirements. Additionally, Visa required that all deployed attended POS PEDs be validated by the PCI as compliant with the PED security requirements effective 1 July 2010. (Initially, these devices were approved only by Visa.)

In 2004, PCI PED Version 1.0 was launched (and later updated to Version 1.3, collectively known as Version 1.x). Devices approved under this PCI program were added to the list of PCI-approved devices, as were other devices evaluated under subsequent versions of the same security requirements. These requirements are regularly enhanced on a three-year cycle, based upon analyses of changes in the threat environment.

Note: Devices approved by Visa prior to the PCI PED coming into effect in 2004 are termed “pre-PCI devices”; in particular, PEDs are known as pre-PCI PEDs

McAffee Antivirus Issues.......WOW......

McAfee antivirus program goes berserk, freezes PCs
Published - Apr 21 2010 03:49PM EST

By PETER SVENSSON - AP Technology Writer

NEW YORK— Computers in companies, hospitals and schools around the world got stuck repeatedly rebooting themselves Wednesday after an antivirus program identified a normal Windows file as a virus.

McAfee Inc. confirmed that a software update it posted at 9 a.m. Eastern time caused its antivirus program for corporate customers to misidentify a harmless file. It has posted a replacement update for download.

"We are not aware of significant impact on consumers and believe we have effectively limited such occurrence," the company said in a statement.

Online posters begged to differ, saying thousands of computers running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 were rendered useless.

About a third of the hospitals in Rhode Island were forced to stop treating patients without traumas in emergency rooms. The hospitals also postponed some elective surgeries, said Nancy Jean, a spokeswoman for the Lifespan system of hospitals. The system includes Rhode Island Hospital, the state's largest, and Newport Hospital, the only hospital on Aquidneck Island.

Jean said patients who required emergency care for gunshot wounds, car accidents, blunt trauma and other potentially fatal injuries were still being admitted to the emergency rooms.

In Kentucky, state police were told to shut down the computers in their patrol cars as technicians tried to fix the problem. The National Science Foundation headquarters in Arlington, Va., also lost computer access.

Peter Juvinall, systems administrator at Illinois State University in Normal, said that when the first computer started rebooting it quickly became evident that it was a major problem, affecting dozens of computers at the College of Business alone.

"I originally thought it was a virus," he said. When the tech support people concluded McAfee's update was to blame, they stopped further downloads of the faulty software update and started shuttling from computer to computer to get them working again.

Such personal attention to each PC from a technician appeared to be the only way to fix the problem because the computers weren't receptive to remote software updates when stuck in the reboot cycle. That slowed the recovery.

Intel Corp. appeared to be among the victims, according to employee posts on Twitter. Intel did not immediately return calls for comment.

Making a T1 Loop Back Tester on a Budge.....& Testing Instructions

Loop Back Instru

The T1 CSU/DSU has a pinout different from the four-wire 56K CSU/DSU. The connector for the T1 CSU/DSU is an RJ-48C. The connector for the four-wire 56k CSU/DSU is an RJ-48S. Both connectors are compatible with RJ-45 plugs.

*

Complete these steps to create a loopback plug for a T1 CSU/DSU:

1.

Use wire cutters to create a working RJ-45 cable that is 5 inches long with an attached connector.

2.

Strip the wires.

3.

Twist the wires from pins 1 and 4 together.

4.

Twist the wires from pins 2 and 5 together.

5.

Leave the rest of the wires alone.

*

Complete these steps to create a loopback plug for a 56K CSU/DSU:

1.

Use wire cutters to create a working RJ-45 cable that is 5 inches long with an attached connector.

2.

Strip the wires.

3.

Twist the wires from pins 1 and 7 together.

4.

Twist the wires from pins 2 and 8 together.

5.

Leave the rest of the wires alone.

Telco-Assisted Loopback Tests

Note: Refer to the Telco Assisted Loop to Router in the diagram above.

Use CSU/DSU tests to test the CSU/DSU, router, and cable that connects them (for an external CSU/DSU) on both sides of the circuit. If you can rule out a problem with them, involve the telco or provider. These loopback tests are done with the assistance of the telco, but are not done independently by the telco.

Note: These tests are not the same as the diagnostic or Bit Error Rate Test (BERT) testing on the line that the telco performs.

For these loopback tests, you must involve the telco since you are ask them to provide loopbacks towards your premises from the telco switches. Monitor the looped circuit from the router. In order to do this, you need to have the telco "split the circuit" at the telco switch closest to your router. For example, the telco must supply a loopback at the first telco switch that your circuit passes through, and loop that circuit back towards your router. In this way you can isolate the telco cloud of switches. You can then test only the portion of the circuit between the first telco switch and your CSU/DSU, SmartJack, and router.

Please refer to the Diagnostic Tests While in Loopback section for information on what you must verify while in loopback.

If you complete this "First Switch" testing, and prove it to run free of errors, perform the same procedure on the remote end of the circuit. The remote end is the router on the other side of the provider cloud. If the remote end is your Internet service provider (ISP), you must involve the ISP to help test this portion of the circuit.

Test the "First Switch" on both sides. If it is clean, you can use this information to indicate that the problem is within the telco cloud. The telco can investigate with their own testing of the circuit at this point. Alternatively the telco can continue the loopback testing with you. The telco can do this by backing off one switch at a time further into the telco cloud. At each switch, they should do a loopback towards the local router.

If "First Switch" tests indicate a problem in the circuit between the first telco switch and your router, the telco can help test that circuit portion. The telco can loop various equipment for diagnostic tests between the SmartJack that you connect your CSU/DSU to and the first telco switch. Bear in mind that, if you have an extended demarc, you should investigate it as a potential problem area. Extended demarcs, when done incorrectly, can produce errors on the line. Extended demarcs occur when the provider extends the original demarc point to a location closer to the customer equipment.

Diagnostic Tests While in Loopback

The best test to run while in any of the loopbacks described above is an extended ping. You should run this test and monitor the show interface serial command for errors on the interface.

Prepare for the Extended Ping Test

Complete these steps to prepare for the extended ping test:

1.

Use the show interface serial command to verify that the router has HDLC encapsulation on the interface, and that the interface sees the loopback.

Here is an example of the first few lines of the output:

Router#show interface serial 0

Serial0 is up, line protocol is up (looped)

Hardware is HD64570

Internet address is 10.1.1.1, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec, rely 255/255, load 1/255

Encapsulation HDLC, loopback set, keepalive set (10 sec)

...

2.

Use the show running-config command to see if the interface has a unique IP address that is not shared with any other interface.

If the serial interface above does not have an IP address of its own, obtain a unique address and assign it to the interface.

Router(config-if)#ip address 172.22.53.1 255.255.255.0

3.

Use the clear counters command to clear the interface counters.

For example:

Router#clear counters

Clear "show interface" counters on all interfaces [confirm]

Router#

4.

Perform the extended ping test as described in the Perform Extended Ping Tests section.

Perform Extended Ping Tests

The ping command is a useful test available on Cisco internetworking devices as well as on many host systems. In TCP/IP, this diagnostic tool is also called an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request.

Note: The ping command is particularly useful when the show interfaces serial output registers high levels of input errors.

Cisco internetworking devices provide a mechanism to send many ping packets in sequence automatically.

Complete these steps to perform serial line extended ping tests:

1.

Perform the extended ping test. To do so, complete these steps:

1.

Type: ping ip

2.

Target address = enter the IP address of the local interface to which IP address was just assigned

3.

Repeat count = 50

4.

Datagram size = 1500

5.

Timeout = press ENTER

6.

Extended cmds = yes

7.

Source Address = press ENTER

8.

Type of service = press ENTER

9.

Set Df bit in ip header = press ENTER

10.

Validate reply data = press ENTER

11.

Data pattern: 0x0000

12.

Press ENTER three times.

Notice that the ping packet size is 1500 bytes, and that we perform an all zeros ping (0x0000). Also, the ping count specification is set to 50. Therefore, in this case, fifty 1500 byte ping packets are sent out.

Here is a sample output:

Router#ping ip

Target IP address: 172.22.53.1

Repeat count [5]: 50

Datagram size [100]: 1500

Timeout in seconds [2]:

Extended commands [n]: yes

Source address or interface:

Type of service [0]:

Set DF bit in IP header? [no]:

Validate reply data? [no]:

Data pattern [0xABCD]: 0x0000

Loose, Strict, Record, Timestamp, Verbose[none]:

Sweep range of sizes [n]:

Type escape sequence to abort.

Sending 50, 1500-byte ICMP Echos to 172.22.53.1, timeout is 2 seconds:

Packet has data pattern 0x0000

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Success rate is 100 percent (50/50), round-trip min/avg/max = 4/4/8 ms

Router#

2.

Perform additional extended ping tests with different data patterns.

For example:

Repeat step 1, but use a Data Pattern of 0x1111

Repeat step 1, but use a Data Pattern of 0xffff

Repeat step 1, but use a Data Pattern of 0xaaaa

3.

Verify that all the extended ping tests were 100 percent successful.

4.

Examine the show interface serial command output to determine whether input errors have increased.

If input errors have not increased, the local hardware (DSU, cable, router interface card) is probably in good condition. Also look for cyclic redundancy check (CRC), frame, or other errors. Look at the fifth and sixth line from the bottom of the show interface serial command output to verify this.

If all pings are 100 percent successful and input errors have not increased, the equipment in this portion of the circuit is probably in good condition. Move on to the next loopback test to be performed.

5.

Remove the loopback from the interface. To do so, remove the loopback plug, the software loopback commands, or request the telco to remove their loopback. Then restore your router to the original setting.

DriveSavers White Paper Reveals Lapses in Data Security with Third-Party Vendors
At the top of every IT professional's priority list these days is data security; and to address the issue, DriveSavers has published a white paper that explores the topic in an entirely new way. Using data from a 2007 survey conducted by the Poneman Institute, the comprehensive document identifies data security breaches by third-party vendors outside the control of IT professionals and corporate CIOs. This white paper outlines trends and facts behind digital data loss and examines the increasing financial costs, regulatory penalties, productivity losses and customer loyalty risks associated with a breach in data security. It also provides data security standards and protocols that every data recovery provider should uphold to preserve the integrity of critical data during the data recovery process. Download your own copy of the PDF version at: www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/whitepaper.
TechTalk: What's a Head Crash and How Does it Affect Data Recovery? It's a fact that DriveSavers has the highest success rate recovering lost data, but there are a percentage of drives we receive that are not recoverable. The causes are varied, but the most consistent symptom is media damage caused by a head crash-a situation where the drive's read/write heads have collided with the disk platter and scraped off the magnetic coating and data. A head crash frequently leads to a disappointed customer with tough questions for you to answer. What is a head crash and what causes it to occur?
For most desktop hard drives, a head crash can develop over time simply through normal use. Whenever a drive is powered off or loses power, the drive actuator (the arm where the read/write heads are mounted) moves to a special landing zone located at the inner diameter of the platter where the heads come to rest. A great deal of friction is created when the read/write heads touch the platter's surface as the drive spins down. Over time, the constant friction causes damage to the heads and the media surface on the inner diameter can be destroyed. Other portions of the platter surface will be destroyed if the hard drive continues to operate. When it comes to laptop hard drives, manufacturers have addressed the issue of friction by designing special off-platter parking systems that allow the read/write head armature to move off the platter during shut down, sleep, standby or hibernate mode. But, laptop hard drives certainly aren't immune to head crashes and in many ways are more susceptible to damage if the computer is bumped or jarred during transport while running.Symptoms of a head crash include repeated spinning up and spinning down of the drive and clicking or grinding sounds. Listen to samples of these sounds on our website at: www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/tips.Remember, that if a customer's hard drive exhibits any of these symptoms and they need data recovery, contact DriveSavers immediately. In our experience, the more attempts made to recover data from a media-damaged hard drive, the lower the chances will be for success, even for experienced DriveSavers engineers. If your customer has vital data they need recovered, always offer DriveSavers as the best solution. Your customer will thank you!
TestimonialI just wanted to let you and everyone at DriveSavers know how amazing I think you all are. I received my hard drive in the mail this morning even though your engineers had only finished the recovery process yesterday afternoon. From Cali to Louisiana overnight!Of the thousands and thousands of files on my drive, 97% were recovered, and I've already checked and found that all of the important stuff I needed is there! I was starting to lose my sanity and my health was suffering from the stress of losing all of this important information, but you all gave me my sanity back. I called multiple times to check in on my drive and surely, I bothered the customer service agents, but I definitely didn't get that vibe from them-nothing but calming words and happy attitudes from your wonderful staff. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. If I lived in Cali, I would bake you all cookies and give you all hugs. You can never understand how much you have helped me.Kim Boyd:)

Drive Savers have done it again !!!!!!!

Disk-aster of the Month
Kathleen York, (also known as Bird York), is an Oscar nominated singer/songwriter for her song, "In the Deep", which was featured in the 2005 Oscar-winning film Crash. York is also a well-known actress, having appeared in over 60 films and television programs including a recurring role as Andrea Wyatt in the show The West Wing. Two years ago, Kathleen wrote and recorded a song for the Tommy Lee Jones film, In the Valley of Elah. Unfortunately, the song, "House is Falling Down", wasn't included in the final release of the film. As Kathleen moved onto other projects, her 200 GB external hard drive suddenly stopped working. "One day it just vanished from the desktop and it wouldn't mount. Just like that. Poof! Disaster!", said York. After In the Valley of Elah completed production, "House is Falling Down" was to be revived and submitted for placement in the television program Army Wives. It was then to be released as a record. According to York, "Locked up on my dead hard drive (along with all the tracks for that song) were tons of other recordings that were not backed up anywhere!"If York couldn't recover her recordings, it meant weeks of work and money spent re-recording the material along with L.A.'s top session players. On a recommendation from a friend, she sent her dead drive to DriveSavers. When it arrived, it was diagnosed as having media damage and firmware corruption. Fortunately, York hadn't attempted to recover her own data using a software solution. "We were able to obtain a near perfect image and a complete recovery." said John Christopher, senior data recovery engineer. "If she had tried recovering the data on her own, it's quite possible that the media damage could've been much worse and even made it impossible to recover."Just a few days after receiving her data back, York emailed DriveSavers, "You should change the name of your company to Lifesavers! You got everything I needed back!"
Question of the Month
What kinds of data recovery attempts can I perform before involving DriveSavers? To avoid permanent loss, remember these important guidelines. Attempting data recovery can be dangerous; it puts your customer's data in jeopardy and can make subsequent attempts impossible. Never attempt a data recovery without warning the customer of the potential dangers involved. If a customer is willing to take the risk, we suggest that you follow these procedures to minimize possible media damage.· If a hard drive makes any repetitive clicking or grinding, stop the process. The drive may have media damage. Operating the drive in this state will make the situation worse.· If you connect the hard drive to a computer and it is not recognized in the setup, stop the process. The drive may have a damaged circuit board and should not be swapped with an identical model, as it could remove the bad sector table.· Avoid utility software that makes changes to the drive's firmware or bad sector table. This can permanently corrupt the data.· Always make a sector copy of the hard drive to another hard drive before using any utility software program.· Avoid home remedies such as placing a hard drive in a freezer. This will create condensation buildup inside the drive mechanism creating further problems.· Remember that if the data is critical, it's best to send the drive to DriveSavers because the first data recovery attempt may be the only chance to get back the data.
Testimonial
Dear DriveSavers,You guys are fantastic! I had pretty much given up on my lost financial records when I called you. Everyone I dealt with in your company was courteous, helpful, and responsible.I especially must single out Kristina and Jim. Kristina fielded my initial desperate call and was sympathetic and supportive. She made sure she understood my particular problem and was clear about the procedure and the cost. She even went the extra mile and called me after having researched consulting resources I needed about an unrelated issue.Jim was incredible. I never knew so highly talented a geek could have such great people skills. He carefully listened to my attempts to explain the problem and made sure he understood what, specifically, I needed from him. He was respectful and patient. The software company had said my data was corrupted beyond repair but miraculously he was able to delve into my hard drive and retrieve a healthy copy.Your competence and customer service are outstanding! I can't thank you enough.Dan Kalb, Ph.D.Novato, CA
Security and Encryption
Encrypted data storage devices are extremely common for businesses, government and individuals storing highly confidential or personal information on them. To understand and overcome the challenges of recovering data from encrypted drives, DriveSavers engineers have worked in partnership with all leading encryption software manufacturers and have been trained and certified by government-approved vendors to recover file and disk-level encrypted data safely and successfully. As a result, government agencies with encrypted systems regularly rely on DriveSavers to recover their lost data. Recently, a US Army employee almost lost all his confidential data. His laptop overheated and began clicking, a symptom of electro-mechanical component failure. To complicate matters, the drive was encrypted. To recover the data, the mechanical components in the 2.5" hard drive first needed to be rebuilt by engineers in our Class 100 cleanroom. Once the mechanical repairs were completed, a file system engineer, certified in encryption data recovery protocol--successfully created a sector-by-sector image of the data on the drive. In special cases, data is so sensitive that we return the sector image back to the customer fully encrypted. The customer can then enter the decryption key to verify the recovered data in their own protected environment.Certain customers and data loss situations require extra security procedures. DriveSavers provides customized data recovery solutions that meet the most stringent data security requirements, including the successful recovery of data from encrypted drives.

Password Protect Word & Excel Sheets

Password Protect Microsoft Word and Excel Documents

Password Protect Microsoft Word and Excel Documents

Contents

Introduction

Microsft Word and Microsoft Excel both have the ability to assist you in protecting your document's security. This "How Do I" document provides you with the steps necessary to protect your document from prying eyes.

Please remember than when password protecting a document, the person who is receiving the document must also have the password or they will not be able to view or modify it.

IMPORTANT: Do not include the password in the same email as the file you are sending. If the email is intercepted the person intercepting it will have both the document and the password, defeating the purpose of password protecting the document in the first place.

Microsoft Word Password Protection

Once you have completed your document there are only a few simple steps required to protect it.

First left-click on the "Tools" menu and then select "Options" from the drop down menu.

On the "Options" screen that appears you must left-click on the 'Security' tab to display the window shown below.

Once you have clicked on the 'Security Tab' you must enter a password in the 'Password to Open:' box. Doing this prevents anyone from being able to open the document without the password you assign.

Remember to use a unique password that will not be easy for someone else to figure out.

Click on OK once you have chosen a password. The window shown below will appear asking you to verify the password you entered.

Once you have done this save the document as you normally would and forward it as usual.

If you require assistance with attaching the document to an email message refer to 'Attaching Password Protected Files to Email Messages'.

Hard Drive Recovery of the Month

Hard drive crash? Need your data? We can save it!
(Computer Works Consulting Group LLC) is an authorized partner in DriveSavers' Reseller Program. Mention our Reseller ID#(DS67190) and receive a discount on your data recovery!

DriveSavers is authorized by all hard drive manufacturers to open sealed drive mechanisms without voiding the original warranty. They are known worldwide as the most trusted and respected company in the industry.
* New recovery services ( iPod, iPhone, Jump Drivers, Media Cards ,Solid State Memory, DVRs, Apple Os )
* DriveSavers Enterprise Systems Group recovers critical data from all types of high-capacity RAID, NAS, SAN, tape and multi-disk servers.
Visit their web site at www.drivesavers.com to learn more or:
Call DriveSavers today to receive an immediate estimate: 1-800-440-1904 Reseller ID#(DS67190) receive a discount on your data recovery!
Insurance Movement *There is a slight movement in the insurance industry for both home-owners and renters insurance where they have been covering the cost of data recovery. It could be called "loss of intellectual property" by them and would probably be in the section under valuable records and documents. Another section to look over would be in the property/casualty coverage. If they have blanket coverage, this could include data loss along with the property damage.
For some people it is worth pursuing - nothing ventured, nothing gained. Others are not willing to touch their insurance company over concerns their rates will go up. This is certainly a very personal decision on a case-by-case basis.
For business insurance the terminology used would be "business critical". Basically, the business/company can't move forward without getting their data back.
GSA Schedule
*We have our recovery services on a GSA schedule, GS-35F-0121S, which can make it easier for the following to access funding to pay for data recovery.
If you have a customer that is a City, State, Federal, Non-profit or Education entity, please be sure to let our advisors know when calling for a quote. We have government pricing and contracts in place that offer great benefits to these establishments. If a single drive is under 200 GB, the overall savings with our contract at this time is approximately 27 percent.

LOST! Crucial Data from Air Force Base
Dean Johnson, systems administrator for The Civil Engineering Squadron at Shaw AFB in South Carolina, keeps computers for 350 users running smoothly. Except when a simple backup procedure failed, it jeopardized access to every file on the squad’s 12-drive RAID server.
Johnson initially believed he could solve the problem himself, but when the system controller failed too, he stopped his recovery efforts. “I knew that if I fired up a new controller and it started a new array, I could kiss my data goodbye.”
New backups had replaced older ones, and three-quarters of the new files were not backed up at all. At risk were: vital training data and flight records that, if lost, would require students to repeat their training, along with archives for the base housing office—information mandated by Congress to be kept in perpetuity.
Johnson described his system to DriveSavers engineers as a RAID 5 array, which would have allowed it to be rebuilt using data stored on a spare drive. However, after our RAID Enterprise Engineering team analyzed the drives, they discovered the configuration was actually a RAID 0 with data striped across all 12 drives. This presented a more difficult challenge because the drives now were mixed up in an unknown order and not how they had been physically arranged in Johnson’s original setup.
When DriveSavers engineers finally unraveled the brainteaser, they recovered a full 45GBs of the most-wanted data. “The value of the recovered data far exceeded the cost of recovery,” said Johnson.
